Wacky Weather and Woodpeckers
Posted By Elaine on March 12, 2009
It is hard to believe that 2 days ago it was 80 degrees and today we had a beautiful snow shower. It was coming down in big fat flakes. A true winter wonderland. Now it is more sleet than snow but Samuel noticed Woodpeckers in the yard tearing up what was left of a stump. This fall the boys were practicing with their hatchet and chopping up stumps that were in the yard. These woodpeckers were the largest woodpeckers I have ever seen! Thanks to the internet we found out that they are PileatedWoodpeckers.

Pileated Woodpecker
If you click on the name in bold it will take you to information on them. Turns out, they are the largest woodpecker in North America. They also stay on the property all year long so I have a feeling we will be seeing them again soon. All of their digging for bugs has attracted all kinds of other birds for the scraps. There are Cardinals, Goldfinches, Wrens, Titmouses, and Chickadees. We have a Pileated Woodpecker pair, a male and female. The male is pictured above. The female doesn’t have the red stripe on the cheek.
You just never know what you are going to get out here in the country. Y’all come back now!
we have woodpeckers down here too I hear them early in the morning when I’m taking sophie grace out
Oh my goodness! What could they possibly what on a metal air conditioner? I thought they were Downy Woodpeckers but all hopped up on speed or something because it looked like their “hair” was sticking up like Don King. We had Downy Woodpeckers at our last house and I think there are some here as well. Hooray for bird dogs!
We have several woodpeckers living in our trees & they make quite a racket. I figured as loud as they are, they had to be the big guys like what you have on your property, but no, they are the little ones. What is funny, but nerve racking is occasionally one will start pecking on out METAL air conditioner/heater pump. Sounds like bombs are being dropped on the house when they do that. Fortunately, the 4 dogs quickly chase them away when they do that.
