The Experiment

Lately I have been concerned with the tenacity of Bullet with “guarding” the chickens. I have noticed, especially when the chickens get treats, crusts of bread, he has started biting toward the chickens. I thought it could either be that he was A) trying to eat them or B) trying to keep them in the wire since they were pressing against the wire. Well, I voiced my concern to Quinn and he gave me very good advice. He said if I was worried about it let the chickens out of the coop and see what he does.

Well two nights ago the boys and I did just that. Knowing that they would come home too roost we let them out at 6pm.,with Bullet on a leash of course. I wanted to make sure he didn’t chase them to death. Then when I was satisfied that he wasn’t going to eat them I dropped the leash to see what would happen then still giving me the option of catching him faster on a leash. He is not the most obedient dog especially if he is “on the job”.

It was a big sigh of relief to know that he just wanted to protect them. He likes to be on the outside but they spread out so much he finds that hard to keep track so he splits his time walking from one bunch to the other. When he gets there he lays down and watches until he is sure they are all well. I think he is counting them in his head. Anybody who is responsible for a large group of children will appreciate his task. Then he moves on to the next bunch. I think I saw him think…Darn, I lost count. All in all he is the best dog we have ever had and the chickens are loving their new found freedom between 6-8pm.

Y’all come back now.

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
