The chicks

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

Well, the chicks were supposed to hatch on friday. I had a very hard time achieving enough humidity. I was able to boost it a little and for a short time with small jars of boiling water to produce steam. I dreaded emptying the incubator so I put it off until after church on Sunday.

I came home and unpluged it and then lifted the lid to peeping. Three had busted holes in the shells. Two died in the shells and another started breaking through. At 6:30 this morning finally one of them broke free and then the other broke free around 10am. They are drying completely and cheeping loudly when they are awake.

This was a huge learning experience for me. I know what not to do next time and not to give up too soon.

Y’all come back now!

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

Aw, those two are cute. Hope they’re layers and not crowers! (That’s always my problem when a broody hen hatches some.) Enjoy them.

I know that it was a hard lesson for you, but one that you will never forget. You did your best, how rare that it wasn’t good enough!!! But…you will do much better next time!
Love your spirit of adventure and love of learning. We love you too, MOM and Dad
