Taking a walk

Posted By on March 1, 2009

It is very cold here today.  It is also very windy but it seems that is always windy.  My baby chickens are scheduled to arrive tomorrow and in all of my reading  Joel Salatin said that creek sand was good grit for chicks.  I know there is a creek down the hill from our property so the boys and I took a walk.

Ready to decend the hill

Ready to descend the hill

In retrospect, it might have been better done in warmer weather. Jacob hadn’t worn his boots in a while and we found he’d outgrown them, so we need to get him new ones.

The hill we just came down. Now we have to go up?

We decided to brave the weather all the same.  There is something about little boys and sticks, water and rocks.  When you combine all three….there is no telling.  Bullet decided to join us as well and he had so much fun romping in the creek.

The rock he is going to throw to the dog.

The boys would throw a boulder rock and he would try to retrieve it out of the creek.   The base of the creek was a solid sheet of rock and due to the rains yesterday it was moving pretty fast.  Samuel said it was freezing!  He found a patch of sandish kind of stuff and scooped it up for me.  I was afraid that Bullet would get hypothermia so after a few more throws we headed for home.  Mind you I am not a small woman so the climb home is a challenge.  The elevation is 800 ft. and it is probably a 45 degree angle.  I think if I do that everyday I will be thin.  When Jacob got in the house he said he couldn’t feel his chin.  Our faces were frozen but we were sweaty from the climb.  It is fun to take a hike with my boys.  Everything is the coolest thing to come and see!  I can’t wait to show you my new babies tomorrow!

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
