Well my husband the chicken farmer was at it again today. His talent is amazing. He developed and executed the plan for the nest boxes. After the last set of boxes was donated I realized that we needed boxes for Samuel’s 4-H chickens. I went online to see what they might cost. Yikes! I was amazed and depressed at the cost of some very nice and trendy boxes. Well, we can’t do that so what now? Quinn asked about some trays or crates or something. Judy also told me about cat litter pans. Well we had the milk crates so we decided to use those.

Shabby chic!

Shabby chic!

We were trying to figure out how to make a support for them out of wood where I could take them out individually for cleaning. Quinn went out to the barn and found these metal wire shelving units I had in the other house. It is a perfect fit! He was able to fit 5 boxes on the one shelf. So….now we have Shabby Chic Chickens!

You know, Quinn came into the country kicking and screaming. There was no way he was going to be a farmer or a farm hand. He would be happy in a flat downtown instead of on 27 acres. Well, he has definitely got a gift for farming (though he still kicks and screams). He seems to enjoy it. What does God say? “I am the potter, you are the clay”? Absolutely in this case.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

What a clever and fitting idea! Holding the shelf with bungee cords is inspired. Thank you for sharing.
