Ready to hatch some peeps

Posted By on January 16, 2010

The boys and I fired up the incubator yesterday. We loaded it up with 41 eggs. I have never hatched chicks before so I don’t really know what I am doing…shocking I know.

They are tucked in and will hatch in about 3 weeks barring a power outage.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

Hey Judy! Thanks for the tip! We have just finished our first week. I am going to candle them today to see if I can see anything. I will check out the hygrometer. All the eggs came from my hens. It took me several days to get enough eggs so I hope they are all still alive. I will keep you posted.

I have a foam incubator that looks just like yours. I suggest you get a hygrometer or humidity monitor. During all but the last few days of incubation the air from the room may be enough for the embryos, but towards the end of the hatch, when the chicks are turning and preparing to pip, the air should be moister. The hygrometer I got was from Wal-mart, has a thermometer in it, and was inexpensive. Good luck with your eggs!
If you don’t mind my asking, where did you get your hatching eggs?

Loved seeing all the Arikana (sp?) eggs. We ate the last ones (green ones).
