Preparing the Garden

Posted By on April 6, 2009

Yesterday was a busy day. Sunday. We all got up and out for church early. There was a bake sale at church and then we grabbed lunch to take home on the way. We were not here very long when we heard this strange rumbling. Our neighbor, Guy, was coming on his tractor to disc up the garden for me. Now, I knew he was coming at some time to do that for me but I didn’t know when, so I was glad I was here and remembered to pick up the camera.

When we had the garden plowed in the fall we thought it was pretty big… 20X40. I was used to 4 raised beds that were 8×4. As Quinn and I watched with fascination, Guy cut the garden up and we turned to each other saying how it’s not really that big after all, and could be bigger. Maybe next year I will make that my winter garden and put all my garlic there and move my summer garden beside the barn.

It was neat to watch him manipulate the discs.

Guy also brought us a bank of nesting boxes that he pulled from a relative’s property. They are quite the find. I can’t remember if there are 5 or 6 across and they are 2 deep. These are very expensive when bought new! I am so grateful to have them. We will have to rehab some of the floors in them, but the rest are sound. Quinn is going to do the rear support of the hoop house and mount them either today or tomorrow so stay tuned for that.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
