Molasses Festival

It seems that I have been on sabbatical with posting on the blog. We have been so busy lately it seems as if I flop into bed after midnight and am up with the roosters early in the morning. My parents came to visit this weekend so first we went to the Farmer’s Market and then to the Molasses Festival at the Ellington Agricultural Center. We have been in years past and it is so much fun but it was a raw, cold day.
The first thing we got to do was milk a goat.

Samuel milking a goat
Samuel did very well with milking. Got it the first try.

Jacob milking a goat
Jacob had a harder time with the milking but he finally got it. The lady scared him when she said “oh no, you broke her. She worked with your brother…what did you do?” He was speechless. It takes a lot to make Jacob speechless so it was a good joke.

Grammy milking a goat
Then it was Grammy’s turn. She had a little trouble on the first go round and then when she got it she sprayed the goat lady. Oopps! Really the only reason she wanted to do it was for the sticker. The goat lady was passing out stickers to the kids that milked a goat. She was trying to convince the grandchildren to give up their sticker for the scrapbook to no avail.

We also saw a guy strolling through the festival strumming a very interesting instrument. Feast your eyes on a “canjo”.

Can jo
The picture doesn’t really do it justice. This is a wooden neck with a single banjo string, a ukulele tuning knob and a spam can. It came complete with a song sheet so you can play. David had to have one and he was very good playing it but decided to leave it behind for my boys to play. Samuel is learning Happy Birthday on it now. Yea.

wagon ride
The boys also got a wagon ride in a covered wagon. There was pottery, bobbing for apples (apples clipped to a string hanging on a tree), butter making, spinning, a “cowboy camp” complete with fried bread and chili. They also had sheep shearing and sheep herding demonstrations that we missed. We had to go get my parents warm. They were troopers, but when it is 95 degrees where you left the day before, and you arrive and it’s 38 degrees, overcast and breezy, it is quite a shock for these Floridians. We had a great day all things considered.
Y’all come back now!
sorry we missed your call. looks like you had a wonderful visit with everyone!
Oh my goodness~~ what a fun day~~~ even with the cold weather.:)
We did have a good time. You forgot that we also went to the Frist for the photography exhibit and ended up playing in the kid center, seeing some Georgia O’Keefe and having a blast! Better than X=rated films anyday! (That’s what were in the adult themed modern photography, etc, exhibit.) Thanks for a wonderful weekend and a nice cold weather fix! Love, MOM, Dad and David
