Jeepers Peepers

We have had quite the chick explosion on the farm. Momma hen hatched out a total of four chicks. They are very cute and follow her where ever she may go.

Hello world!

Hello world!

That picture was taken before Momma jumped out of the nest box.

I have also had ten hatch out of the incubator! Far better than the first attempt at hatching eggs. See that story here.

Yesterday Samuel picked up his 4-H chicks for the “Chick Chain”. He got 25 Black Sexlink pullets. A pullet is a young hen. He has to raise them and then bring the six best back to the Robertson County Fair for them to auction off to pay for next years chicks. He gets to keep what ever is left. Pretty good deal. We also stopped at Tractor Supply and picked up 10 more chicks for me. When we got home everyone went in the pool…aka…brooder.

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

Reminds me of my days at home on the farm when my Dad had thousands of chickens and my job was to gather the eggs. He ran an egg and produce route down to Baltimore and the DC area every week; he had regular customers. We had a HUGE chicken house and a little red building that was our “brooder”. It was no fun trying to get the eggs out from under those mama hens every morning! Peck, Peck, Peck! Good luck with all your babies! What fun!
