Hoop house part deux

Posted By on April 10, 2009

We finally finished the hoop house! Quinn got the bracing done at the back so we can hang the nesting boxes.

We had to remove the old perches from the nest boxes and we will replace with new. Yesterday I was able to get the wire up on both ends so that we could move the chickens out to the barn and out of the garage. I worked like the devil to get ends done before my grooming clients showed up. I got most of it done and then finished just before dinner. Quinn was nice enough to bring pizza home for dinner so…bonus!.. I didn’t have to cook.

Quinn and the boys helped me get the chickens moved into their new quarters right after dinner. They were a little stunned with all the room that was afforded them.

We left them for the night hoping they would poke around and figure out what kind of room they had but alas it was too late in the evening so they just hunkered down for the night in the pool.

The next morning I heard the boys leave the house to check on the chickens at 6:15am! Only farmers get up that early, right! They were very upset that they were still in the pool and the pizza crusts we laid out on the floor were still there.

After I was showered and dressed we went out again to check on them and they were still in the pool so the boys went in and took them all out of the pool and put them near their food and water.

Hellooooooo

Hellooooooo

I am happy to report that they have adjusted to their new home quite well. They were sparing and fighting over the carrot peels that I gave them for dinner. They are still in the barn for the time being due to the weather. We had a bunch of tornadoes in the area today so I was quite relieved to leave them in the barn. Everybody was safe up here, but the area south of Nashville received a bunch of damaging tornadoes.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

    Wow Guys,
What a great job! I am so impressed. Keep at it and you will be building a hen house before fall. I was funny to see all those teenagers in that little pool…just like David and his friends, all jammed in together for support!!
Have a blessed Easter, sorry we didn’t get anything sent. Love ya, MOM
