History Festival

Posted By on October 27, 2009

While my Dad was here we went to the History festival that was at the Bicentennial Mall on the Capitol. It was sponsored by the National Parks. In Nashville Tn we have such a treasure with this park. It is kind of like the Mall on the Capitol in DC in that it is overlooked by the Capitol building and that it is long and full of treasures. At the front of the park is a working train trestle a full size map of Tennessee in the pavement complete with lights for major cities. Then you have the fountains. Each fountain represents a body of water in Tennessee. These are flush with the ground so in the summertime children love to frolic in them. Then there is a green space that is long and narrow like the water version in DC. On either side of the green space there are historical elements of Tennessee. On one side you travel from East Tennessee through Middle Tennessee and on to West Tennessee. Each section has little time capsules buried with their counties time capsule. There is a map of Tennessee on top of each manhole cover with the name of the county on it. On the other side you have giant pillars in 10 year increments of Tennessee state history. There is also a granite wall that runs the length of the park with events etched in the granite for that period of time. In the forward part of the green space is an amphitheater. They were putting on a play while we were there called “Liberty” about the life of James Robertson.

It was a cold wet day so most of the people were standing as to not sit on the cold wet concrete and grass.

This is a civil war camp

This was a camp set up either as settlers or as a civil war camp. It was in that area. All these re-enactors spent the weekend here in character. They ate and slept here. We got to see them making cornbread for lunch.

These eggs were roasting at the Herbalist’s camp. They also had some cough syrup cooking. It was cherry bark and water.

I really enjoyed listening to the herbalist. Very interesting.

Of course I had to watch the soap demonstration. She was making her own lye and using herbs in her soap.

De Soto

The last thing we saw was De Soto. It was cool to see the horse dressed up in all the chain mail. It was not a real horse on this day though. There was lots more to see and do but it was so cold and damp and we had to get my Dad to the airport for his journey home so we just hit the highlights. We can’t wait until next year though.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
