Happy Thanksgiving

Posted By on November 26, 2009

I hope everyone had a wonderful day full of family, friends and fun. I am thankful for all and especially thankful for my husband, who is never too old to try new things.

This year he got a heaping dose of that. The story starts with a simple dream to move to the country. Once he relinquished the city life and actually moved to the country he learned that there is much to be done.

He did not complain when I ordered more chickens than would fit in one coop…he built me a second. He also didn’t complain when my garden needed topsoil to complete the task at hand…he told me to order more. When I talked about a barn for goats he said “make it so”. And when I said that we needed to get rid of two roosters he was accepting.

He did not really bargain for the actual slaughtering… the boys wrangled him into that. So today we had “Chicken Day”. He brushed up on everything that had to be completed and gave everybody a job. Samuel wanted to do one of the chickens. We thought that would be alright but he did not have enough strength behind him so Dad took over. I scalded and plucked and the boys fetched the chickens and took pictures.

Disclaimer: There was actual harm that came to these chickens! If you are queasy in any way, thank you for reading and come back next time. I have tried to be tasteful in depicting this event but death is never pretty.

Samuel really wanted to be involved in the whole process. He wanted to do it all. He needs to gain some weight and height before he can have the job. He will get there though.

Dinner

This was our unconventional Thanksgiving dinner. Roasted Rooster, Sweet Potato Casserole, and Stuffin Muffins (a la Rachel Ray). It was different. The dark meat was really dark and the white meat was a little dry but the boys ate and ate well so that is all that counts.

I hope I didn’t gross anybody out too bad. It wasn’t as gross as I thought it would be. I am very Thankful.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
