I've had good results using molded plastic cat litter pans for nest boxes. They're easy to clean and to change filler, don't hold bugs. The chooks seem pretty happy to use them, too, and the edges of the covered kind discourage roosting. We shred paper for mulch, and this makes a good, absorbent, clean nest fill material for the hens.
