repairing the hospital

repairing the hospital

One of my Turkens, a breed of chicken with no feathers on their necks, has a really bad wound on her head. I treated it two days ago with ointment and it looked a little better but today it looks like it got opened up again. I guess the others are either picking on her or the roosters are making it worse.

After consulting my chicken expert, my friend Mollie, we have determined that I have about 3 too many roosters. They are pretty brutal on the hens and it is starting to stress them out, not to mention doing damage to the birds without feathers on their necks. It seems they use the neck feathers to catch and hang on to the girls. My poor Turken didn’t fare very well when they started pulling out the feathers on the top of her head. Nothing left to hold on to.

Quinn helped me move an old rabbit hutch from the side of the barn and he helped me re-attach the side doors. I got this rabbit hutch from Freecycle when we lived in the city to use as a brooder for some chicks. It makes the perfect chicken hospital. I love re-purposing things. We got her all tucked in for the night. I will call the co-op tomorrow to see if they have a better ointment. I hope she heals fast.

We are going to schedule a “chicken day” to remedy the rooster situation. (Yum! Fried Chicken!)

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
