Chicken Demonstration

Posted By on October 10, 2009

My church has a free before and after school program for the middle schoolers in the community. It is called A.C.T.I.O.N. or All Children Together In Our Neighborhood. It is a fantastic program for working families. It gives middle school kids a safe place to go before mom and dad get off work. There are about 20-25 kids in the afternoon. Well, one of the leaders approached me about giving a demonstration about my chickens and the farm. Kind of a cool request for me. I didn’t really know what to expect but I happily agreed. I was told I could do just about anything I wanted and I was allowed to bring a few chickens for show and tell.

I decided to bring Adonis, my handsome rooster finally has a name, thank you Kris. Victoria, my favorite hen, Samuel’s favorite hen, Delila, and one of my Turkens because they are so odd. We got all set up and I snapped two pictures and then assigned the camera to Samuel. The chickens were not too freaked out by all the noise. I was amazed and grateful. Samuel and Jacob were awesome helpers. They were stunned when these big girls and boys were running and screaming when the birds flapped their wings and ruffled their feathers. Samuel and Jacob ended up holding a chicken and letting the kids pet and answer questions. So I never got any pictures of the event which is ok because Samuel did a better job doing what he did.

I was so proud of my boys. I think they were proud that they could teach the big kids something new. They asked a lot of really good questions and were able to settle down and get up close with the birds. I also took some eggs and they were all amazed by the green egg. All in all a pretty good day.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
