Busy bee

Today I had a “day off”. I did not have any dogs scheduled so I enlisted the boys to help me with blackberry picking. We came up with a deal and I paid them in Wii time. For the most part they were a big help. After all the berries were picked I started making jam. My kitchen looks like a Smucker’s test kitchen. I did a triple batch of blackberry jam and then I went right into the peaches that were awaiting my attention. I had enough for a triple batch of that as well.

While we were eating dinner this evening we were watching the hummingbirds. They are quite active little birds, arguing over who gets to be at the feeder next. There is usually squabbling and a lot of aerial acrobatics. Well tonight one of them flew right into the window. They know it is there and there are enough fingerprints and dog nose prints to tip them off. I guess she just miss judged. I went out to see if I could help her or at least save her from the cat. She was quite stunned and had the wind knocked out of her.

I say “her” because she did not have a ruby throat. She is so small and delicate but a very sturdy bird. Samuel came out with the camera to get a few pictures of her close up.

As big as my thumb.

As big as my thumb.

After a while I put her on the feeder to see if she would come around. She was able to sit and catch her breath and then the next thing we knew she was gone.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.

How awesome to get to hold a hummingbird in your hand!! We’ve been trying to attract some around our house but some critter keeps getting to the feeder and knocking it down. They are such cute little things. Thanks for sharing these great pics!

  2. Oh, the poor little girl, but how wonderful to be able to hold one in your hand! I hope she was okay! I LOVE the little hummers. We get so few of them in our gardens. I guess we just don’t have the right flowers for it – not something I have focused on. I do have a feeder hanging but it has no feed in it. I’m still not sure I want that responsibility – changing the feed every few days to prevent mold and watching the temps so it doesn’t get too cold at night (either will kill the little birds), so I haven’t put anything in the feeder yet.
