A day at Lady K Farms

day with the goats

day with the goats

We met the most wonderful lady today. As you all know I make goat milk soap and I was getting dangerously low on goat milk. I really liked the farm I got my milk from last year but since we moved it was just way too far. I found Miss K on Craigslist and was able to barter milk for soap. She has Alpines and Saanen goats.

She also has the most adorable calf named Guthrey. Maybe I am a cow person instead of a goat person. Hmmm. I definitely want a cow but I am pretty sure I want goats as well. I have a long way to go with either because I have to fence the property. Miss K let me go in with the calf and the goats. The calf was more anxious to see me because he thought I had milk.

Miss K showed me how to let him suckle on my fingers. That was so cool! I felt like a mama cow! ( Not just in size) I could definitely see myself with cows.

The highlight was that she let me milk one of the goats. It was definitely harder than the cows I have milked but I was happy for the opportunity. After I was done playing around she finished up. I think she milked at least 12 goats in 30 mins. and then gave us a walk around the pasture. The goats were very nervous that we were there but they weren’t real skittish. Miss K explained that visitors mean that someone leaves. Makes sense to me. I would hate for visitors to come and take one of my sisters away too. I got lots of ideas of planing out the property while I was there. We all can not wait to go back to see everybody.

Y’all come back now!

About the author

I am a work at home Mom of two of the best boys ever. I am a Nationally Certified Master Groomer and have been grooming out of my home for the last 12 years. We have recently moved to Greenbrier Tn on 27 acres. We are new to the "homesteading thing" but we are excited to learn. We hope to be filling our farm with many critters and a garden. We are homeschoolers so everything is a unit study to us. It has been fun to see the boys help Dad cut firewood. We will also be learning how to build a chicken coop in the near future as well. I have been making handcrafted soap lately as well and I am seeing an improvement in that business as well. It is all natural vegetable and goat milk based soaps. Can't wait to share this experience with everyone.
