7 Random odd and interesting things about me
Posted By Elaine on February 27, 2009
Well, my friend Eren McKay has tagged me on her blog. For those of you who don’t know, tagging is something that is all the rage on the internet right now. Eren was tagged by a friend so she had to write about herself and then tag others. So here is my attempt not to bore all of you about me.
1. Gardening
I love to plant a garden! Especially Garlic.
I also love to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and beans. There is something completely satisfying about planting something so small and have it grow into something that sustains.
2. Faith
Faith is very similar to gardening. It is amazing to see what God can do through others to plant seeds of Truth and have them develop and grow into beautiful children of God. Like gardening you need to weed and prune and cultivate to develop something that sustains.
3. Homeschooling
We have two fantastic little boys who we are developing into Godly young men. It was never my intention before having children to homeschool them. That was something that God laid on my heart, and my husband Quinn embraced the idea with me. My oldest child was born with a birth defect called Goldenhar Syndrome. It is basically a craniofacial abnormality and he has been through many surgeries and procedures and has many more to go. He is such a sweet and gentle spirit and we want him and his little brother to grow to be the best that God has planned for them. He is very bright and it will be a challenge to keep him challenged through high school, but with God’s help we will move mountains.
4. Chickens
I love chickens! It is hard for me to believe that I would love them so much. I started five years ago getting six hens for eggs in my backyard in the suburbs. I could not believe how much fun they were to watch and take care of . I loved to feed them my left over spagetti “worms” and have them come running as a thundering herd when they knew I had a treat. Unfortunately I was not allowed to keep my chickens in the suburbs. I needed to have 5 acres or more to keep them. I was devastated, so I made the nine hour trek to Virginia to give them to my best friend Mollie. Everyone told me they would not survive the trip. HA! My girls were so content they even laid eggs along the way. I wish I had a picture to show you but this was before we had a digital camera.
That started the search for the perfect farm. Here we are, and my new charges will be here on MONDAY! So if anyone wants to try chickens, be careful, they are addicting.
5. Frugal living
I love to stretch a dollar and pinch pennies. I started making my own laundry soap because it only cost $.03 per load. It actually cleans better than most of the expensive brands and is better for the environment and my septic system. There are so many uses I have found for Vinegar that I buy it by the case. I get a lot of satisfaction out of being frugal and know that I am helping my family.
6. Cooking
I didn’t start cooking until three years ago. I never cooked prior to that other than making Christmas cookies with Grandma. I was fairly decent at baking but actually preparing a meal was a struggle. My husband was the cook. I actually met him working in a restaurant where he was the cook and I was the waitress. It was literally love at first sight for me… not just because he could cook, but that was definitely a plus. So it is a complete surprise to me that I am the one who does most of the cooking now and I actually enjoy it. I like trying new things but still need a recipe. I can’t deviate too far from the directions but I am willing to change a few things now.
7. Grooming
I am passionate about animals and grooming has been the perfect mix of business and pleasure. I am able to play with all kinds of different dogs on a daily basis and get paid for it. I will never forget someone telling me that if you want to be successful you need to find something you love to do and figure out a way to make money doing it. Great advice! I started out working as a kennel worker, shoveling poo. That was fun but very grueling. Then I worked for a vet. That was hard emotionally but it was where I got my start grooming. I got invaluable experience working there. Then I went to work for a groomer and then back to the kennel I used to work for, only as a groomer this time. I studied and begged and borrowed client dogs and over a period of a year I finally received my Master Groomer certificate. Other than my children, it is something I am most proud of.
If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be a work at home Mom of two, homeschooling and on a farm, I would have thought you were crazy. Well, I am all those things and I have never been happier. Go figure!
Now I am going to tag 3 amazing ladies.
Tag….you”re it.
Y’all come back now.
I absolutely looove your list. It tells me that you’re the kind of go getter do it yourself erson.
That’s really a great quality.
Your kids are so fortunate to have a mom like that ;-D
Blessings,
Eren
Dear Elaine,
You certainly are all of those things. To think that you hated weeding the garden at home, abhored helping to put away the ‘goods’ from the food co-op and tried to get out of helping when it was time to ‘put up’ jam, tomatoes and other garden goodies. What a long, learned journey you have been on. I am so proud of all you do! I would never home school you or your brothers and I have a teaching degree, but you do it well. Never have I seen anyone squeeze a penny as well as you do and get a dime back!!! You have much to teach us and we are listening. Thanks for the lessons. Love, MOM
PS, I lost that laundry soap recipe.
*gasp* I looked up “uses for vinegar”…simply amazing!! ;^o
